Sleeve and Back Piece Tattoos in Cologne – Planning Large Projects

A sleeve or back piece isn't one big design; it's a project that grows over several sessions. For it to read as one image at the end, it needs a plan from the start. I'm Marin Yordanov, an independent tattoo artist in central Cologne, and large black and grey and realism projects have been a focus of my work for more than 10 years.

With a single piece, the subject is what matters most. With a sleeve, back piece or chest piece, transitions, direction and balance matter too: what sits at the centre, what steps back, how the image flows around the arm or shoulder. I work that out before the first line.

What makes a large project different from a single tattoo?

How is a sleeve planned?

I start with the main subjects and where they sit: upper arm, forearm and shoulder all offer different surfaces. Then I plan the connections so the arm works from every side, including the inner arm and elbow.

How is a back piece planned?

The back is the largest continuous area of the body. It needs a clear centre, calmer edges and a composition that stays balanced as you move.

Can existing tattoos be worked in?

Often, yes. Older tattoos can be built into a new sleeve, reworked or covered. Which makes sense depends on how dark and large they are and where they sit. Send photos with your enquiry. More on cover-ups in Cologne.

How many sessions does a large project take?

It depends on size, detail and placement. Large projects are always spread across several sessions, and we'll decide together whether to book them close together or further apart.

Which styles suit large areas?

Mainly black and grey, realism and dark realism. Portraits and animals work well as main elements in a sleeve.

A huge thank you to Marin — this realism sleeve is absolutely insane! I wanted a piece dedicated to the history of St. Lucia, and Marin brought that vision to life perfectly. The black-and-grey portrait is breathtaking, and the attention to detail in the historical elements is simply on another level. If you’re looking for flawless realism tattoos, Marin is the artist you need to book. 10/10!

I can only recommend Yordanov Arts very highly! I’ve just had both of my arm tattoos (sleeves) completed by them, and the entire process was flawless from start to finish.

Even during the consultation, Yordanov Arts were incredibly professional. They took the time to listen to my ideas, but where they really shone was their creativity. They took my vague concepts and transformed them into two cohesive, stunning designs that fit the anatomy of my arms perfectly. They made suggestions about placement and shading that I never would have thought of, and the final artwork surpasses anything I could have imagined.

Throughout all the sessions, their studio was impeccably clean and they maintained the highest hygiene standards, which gave me a lot of confidence. They also made sure I was comfortable the entire time. If you’re looking for an artist who is not only a master of his craft but also a truly creative professional, go to Yordanov Arts. I’m already planning my next tattoo!
